  Castleton China Museum Ware

It is probable that Eva Zeisel's most widely honored design was her Museum Dinnerware for Castleton China. The design (shape) has been recognized as a signal achievement by nearly every design group and industry publication, and by art critics in all venues.  It is often assumed that the dishes were made only in White, which was the pattern used when it was released by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1945. Castleton, however, used the shapes as the basis for several decorations which it commissioned later, and even for decorative plates by outstanding artists or for commemorative plates for important cultural and historic events and personages.  We are very proud to be able to offer some of these outstanding pieces.  A partial listing  of patterns used on the Museum shapes: Thistle, French Garden,  Golden Meadow, Wisteria, Lyana, Green Thumb, Constellation, Mandalay, Contempo,  Symmetra, Persian Brocada, Royal Baroness,  Dawn Rose, Blue Rose, Classic Scroll, Cellini, Rhythm, and several hand-painted plates.  Artists who were commissioned to decorate plates include Modigliani, Picasso, Andrew Wyeth, Marcel Vertes,  Stuart Davis, Ralph Ellender, Marc Chagall, and Nicholas L. Retkes.   Most were released under the Castleton mark, but some were released with the marks of  subsidiary groups American Manor,  Reynolds China and Interpace, all part of the Shenango companies.  All production of these pieces ceased in the early '60's when Shenango was sold.   Not all of these pieces have bottom stamps,  but all are guaranteed to be as represented.
