Zeisel, Mostly

Red Wing Town & Country

Zeisel's Town and country dinnerware for Red Wing China was certainly one of the most playful designs she ever produced.  Released in 1946 and 1947, it gained instant popularity for informal dining.  It was originally produced in nine colors: chartreuse, dusk blue, forest green, gray, white, metallic brown (bronze), peach, sand and rust.  A little later Red Wing issued it in four more colors: Ming green, mulberry, lime green, and copper glow.  As with most manufacturers, Red Wing used some of the Town and Country colors on other designs they produced, just as they had taken the "later" colors from other designs that were already in production.  Since the dishes have no bottom stamp, they are hard to identify, and it pays to be very careful, to make sure that any pieces you buy really are Town and Country.  These are!
